There hasn’t been a designer more influential to the classic style than Coco Chanel. From a woman so plagued with self-doubts, bouncing from jobs to jobs, a bit lost after losing her mother, and dubbed as ” a mass of contradictions”, she was able to create a simple, strong, yet feminine look that reverberates in all women, decades after. Or, at least, this is the statement author and fashion writer Justine Picardie makes in “Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life”. Picardie digs deep into Coco Chanel’s upbringing, discerning fact from fiction and offering a fresh and penetrating look at what defined the woman behind the brand.
I find this perspective of Coco Chanel particularly interesting, for I think her personality above all other designers is most directly characterized through the clothing she created. Each Chanel lover finds something in the brand to love, and even if it’s purely aesthetic it represents a piece of this grand, influential woman. I highly recommend reading this book.
