Le Corbusier, the Rockstar

When one thinks of modern architecture, it’s hard not to forget Le Corbusier, the rockstar of 20th century architecture. Visionary, builder, writer, designer, the eccentric Le Corbusier was anything but ordinary, and loved the spotlight. Yet it wasn’t until a subtle shift in style that Le Corbusier would become immortal, and coined as the founder of Bauhaus, or the International Style. La Villa la Roche-Jeanneret, located in Square due docteur-blanche, Paris marks that turning point. Built in 1923, the sprawling abode consists of two homes that were each mindful of the European avant-garde, and shifted attention to the contemporaries, comprised of large, flat expanses and conventional windows at their edges.

Although the building represents a strong shift in Le Corbusier’s style of architecture, it’s frame is characteristic, using a rectangular approach to build it from the ground up. Le Corbusier was extremely fond of Vitruvius and Leonardo DaVinci’s “Vitruvian Man,” and used the Golden Ration drawn from it in all of his architectural sketches. His insight into modern, urban architecture was unprecedented for someone from his time.

La Villa Jeanneret was commissioned by Le Corbusier’s brother, Albert Jeanneret, and was meant to house many more than he and the Roches. However, the home was never expanded, despite its sheer size. Le Corbusier, who’s actually named Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, went on to create more architectural feats shortly thereafter, including the acclaimed 1927 Villa Stein in Garches. In his lifetime, he built 75 edifices in 12 different countries, and was on the helm of 42 major city planning projects. The impression the industrial age left upon him resonates clearly in his work, even to this day.
