Is wallpaper making a comeback? Perhaps. The trend, once shunned as dowdy and old-fashioned seems to be cropping up in the latest home design blogs and featured by interior designers across the city. However, eco-friendly features and personal touches give wallpaper a whole new meaning…maybe it should be called wall art instead?

Tactile Wonderland, based in the UK, has a line of sustainable fabric dubbed “wall couture” that redefines wallpaper. These custom made wall coverings pay homage to the textile heritage of Britain, and is available in woven rayon or sustainably sourced pulp and polyester.

And then there’s Abigail Edwards’ Seascape wallpaper designs, which were hand-drawn. For something so intricate and detailed, the overall result is surprisingly soothing and elegant.

Toile is a regular favorite of mine, so I was really happy to see it prominently featured in the 26-room Hotel Daniel in Paris, which was recently redone by London-based designer Tarfa Salam. Rooms not only have Toile de Jouy wallpaper, as pictured above, but hand-painted wallpaper as well to give the hotel an exotic feel in an otherwise impersonal place.
