Okay, New York, we get it. New York can be industrial, and rustic, and revert back to the blue-collar days of grabbing grub after a long hard day at the factories. We take American values and dreams and make it chic with subway tiles and artfully rustic decor. But regardless of the restaurant or home, no matter the food served or occasion, these establishments are always lit by an Edison lightbulb.
In essence, the Edison lightbulb is a gorgeous way of lighting a room. Not only are they visually pleasing, they provide the perfect, soft warm light that flatters everyone and brings a cozy yet effortless vibe to the room. But according to Noah Horowitz, a senior scientist at the environmental group, these bulbs use five to ten times as much energy as other bulbs on the market.
Furthermore, this trend is by no means new, being covered by the NYTimes a year ago and Gawker three years before. But the trend is still going strong, and in my opinion, treading a thin line between overplayed and a piece of New York history.
So which alternatives would be best to achieving the same look without chasing fad? A warm, rustic environment can be created by other light features that reminisce of rural living:

Found here, this firefly lamp reminds me of warm summer nights and gin and tonics.

A barn light uses as much energy as a standard bulb and offers an industrial feel.
