Could the new Apple store in Grand Central help to minimize tourists in NYC?
Yes, it is rumored that Apple is opening their largest store in the world inside Grand Central on its East and Northeast balconies, even displacing Charlie Palmer’s Métrazur restaurant. But apart from a last minute headphone purchase here and there, we can’t imagine that this store will be popular with New Yorkers, gaining its revenue from eager tourists instead.
According to this study, the 5th avenue Apple store is the fifth most photographed landmark in New York City, trumping both Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty. Grand Central did manage to gain more popularity, which only helps Apple’s latest endeavor.
For a tourist, this seems like the best of both worlds; a massive (and presumably well-designed) Apple Store within a classic New York City landmark. They don’t have to leave the terminal! Sounds like a great deal for New Yorkers, too, who already know how to maneuver quickly through the throngs of people to their destination. In my opinion, the less tourists outside of the walls of Grand Central, the better.
