A Parisian Illusion in New York

First stop, brunch at Le Petite Abeille, a cute French inspired restaurant located on Hudson St. There’s also three other locations in the city, which usually deters me from checking out a space. Nevertheless we were greeted by friendly staff, and incredibly attractive bartender, and many, many families with young children. I’m a big fan of sweet, and my friend, savory, and we were both impressed by the substantial brunch menu, which included tons of Belgian waffles, French toast, specialty omelletes and more. The food wasn’t incredible, but filling and reasonably priced. The good stuff is the gelato, which is fresh and smooth and comes in decadent flavors, including tiramisu. Overall, my friend and I were thrown off by the family-based crowd, but are glad we stumbled upon a place that’s perfect for bringing visiting relatives.

We continued upon this Parisian vibe by seeing The Illusionist, the new movie by French animator Sylvian Chomet, most known for his movie The Triplets of Belleville, released in 2003. Although it’s received good reviews thus far, it’s only showing in two theatres in New York City, one being the Paris Theatre. The Paris Theatre is the longest continuously operating art cinema in the United States, and has premiered the best of American, international and independent films. Not only is the interior lush and tranquil, with velvet covered chairs and heavy drapes concealing the movie screen before it starts, the small and cozy lounge makes the atmosphere very romantic. The Illusionist, which was both heartbreaking and magical, made our Parisian excursion complete.
