Crosby Street 1978

I came to Manhattan in the late 1980’s, I worked as a girl friday for an artist on Fridays in TriBeCa. My boyfriend would pick me up some nights when I worked late, and at that time you could drive through Soho from Franklin Street in TriBeCa to Houston Street with no traffic and barely meeting another person.  It was a very surreal feeling. So when I saw this photograph from Thomas Struth it recaptured that moment for me.

Crosby Street today.

Today the Street scape of Crosby has changed dramatically but it still retains an abundance of character and charm.  One of the reasons for this is that it does not run though to canal street, but dead ends at Howard so its sense of anonymity is protected.

Back in the 80’s Madonna and Basquiat briefly lived together in his Studio on Crosby before she left due to his drug use.

In more recent times another unusual couple has lived on the Street.
